Memphis faces a shortage in the vital area of emergency services at a time when the city can least likely afford a shortage, given recent crime statistics and the aging baby boomers.
The shortage exists specifically with emergency medical technicians and paramedics, mirroring a national trend.
“We are short 73 EMTs,” says Keith Staples, public information officer for the Memphis Fire Department. The department currently has 200 existing paramedics among 1,200 firefighters. EMTs are trained on three levels: EMT basic, EMT IV and EMT paramedic. An EMT basic requires a semester of training while an EMT paramedic requires two years of training.
Staples believes the department shortage is linked directly to a change in standards. “This year, the Memphis City Fire Department followed a national trend requiring all firefighters become certified EMT paramedics,” he says. New hires will be given three years to attain certification. Current firefighters are not required to get certified.
