When disaster strikes, it’s best to have a plan in hand, according to the former head of emergency services for Virginia Tech.
Colin Whitmore will be addressing the 28th Montana Emergency Medical Services Association conference that gets under way today at the Heritage Inn in Great Falls.
“The most important thing is to have a solid list of the hazards most likely to occur at any place,” said Whitmore in a telephone interview Thursday from ICF International in Fairfax, Va., where he’s now a security consultant.
“It’s important to analyze those hazards and then train for them, running through the steps that you would actually go through in an emergency,” he said.

Thursday kicked off their 26th annual Emergency Medical Services Education Conference.
Over the next 4-days, EMT’s and paramedics will participate in mock emergency responses that they might encounter out on the road.
There will be 57 different topics taught.

The Southern Tier Regional Emergency Medical Services Council and EMSTAR (Emergency Medical Services Training, Administration and Resources) will host the 2007 Southern Tier Regional EMS Conference.
The conference will take place Oct. 27 at Corning Community College, and will highlight modern aspects of scene safety.
Registration is limited and all local paramedics, firefighters, emergency medical technicians, first responders and other emergency personnel are encouraged to attend. The conference is regionally approved for six CME credits.
