Ambulance Crash

Posted on 12 March 2009 by wyoskibum

FARGO, ND – The weather is being blamed for a tragic crash in eastern North Dakota this morning.

A patient died when the ambulance he was riding in rolled.

The highway patrol says the driver and paramedic were also hurt.

An ambulance crew from Carrington was transferring Kenneth Kandt, 66, of Fessenden, North Dakota from the Carrington Health Center to a Fargo hospital.

The ambulance driver, Brenda Schneider, 23, was driving a Carrington ambulance and was treated and released from Innovis hospital.

The paramedic in the back of the ambulance, Michael Parr, 39, is still at the hospital.

He suffered serious back injuries and is in stable condition.

“We had some icy mixture of precipitation coating the highways,” says Jim Prochniak, with the Highway Patrol. “Now it`s turned white. Highways look all right, but it`s catching quite a few people off guard.”

Because of these early morning conditions the North Dakota Highway patrol says the driver of the ambulance lost control and started to slide.

The vehicle rolled once into the south ditch and landed on it`s wheels.

It also hit an overhead sign.

“They were running into the freezing rain and closer to 20 miles out west to Fargo,” says Brenda Rask, the Carrington Health Center spokesperson. “That`s when she lost control of the vehicle.”

Rask says when you work in a rural health setting, weather is a major issue.

Rask says ambulance crews try to be as safe as they can for themselves and the patients, this was just an unfortunate incident.

“The original party being transported ended up dying at Innovis hospital so real tragic ending to something that was trying to offer some help to somebody,” says Prochniak.

“It`s a small town, every body knows everybody,” Rask says. “A little bit of a shock and devastation. And we will all take care of each other.”

The Cassleton and FM ambulance came to assist the first accident.

The Carrington Health Center was unable to tell me the original condition of the man who was killed.

The coroner`s office will have to determine whether the victim`s death was a result of his previous medical condition or if it was a direct result of the crash.

Ambulance Crash on Milwaukee’s South Side

Posted on 11 March 2009 by admin

MILWAUKEE–An ambulance rolled over after an accident with a car at the intersection of 43rd Street, Forest Home, and Oklahoma.

The accident happened around noon on Wednesday. The ambulance was on its’ way to Saint Luke’s Hospital with an injured patient in the back when police say the accident occurred. Deanna Nedboralski lives next to the intersection and heard the accident.

‚ÄúI heard a big crash and all of the sudden, I ran outside to see what happened and I heard a bunch of sirens,” Nedboralski said.

Four people were injured, including the patient in the back of the ambulance. Everyone is expected to be all right. A Curtis Ambulance spokesman says the ambulance had its’ lights on and had a green light at the time of the crash. Police are still investigating whether or not anyone ran a red light.

TODAYS TMJ4 rode along with a Curtis Ambulance crew. As they sped through the city with lights flashing, some drivers still did not pull over. One van even pulled out right in front of the ambulance. “That happens on almost every call that you get something like that,” observes ambulance driver Cory Bova.

He says it can cost precious time. “If it’s a serious call, that’s problematic. It delays your transport time to the hospital or getting on the scene.”

“I would say maybe 40 to 50 percent of people actually do what they’re supposed to do. The rest don’t,” Bell Ambulance Operations Manager Chris Anderson said in regards to drivers pulling over.

He says the accident highlights the growing problem of distracted drivers ignoring emergency vehicles, and not pulling over.

“It seems like people are increasingly talking on their phones, text messaging while they’re driving, which obviously takes their attention away from the roads, let alone emergency vehicles approaching,” Anderson said.

Since the investigation into the crash continues, police are not sure yet if the driver of the car will be ticketed.

It happened this morning on the intersection of University and West County Road.

According to police reports, a 1983 Cadillac rear-ended a Crown Victoria, which in turn hit the ambulance as it was moving northbound on west county road.

But the ambulance driver kept going with only minor damages to the side of the vehicle.

Updated 10/31: Ambulance collides with car in NW Side crash Friday

Posted on 31 October 2008 by admin

Eight people were taken to area hospitals Friday morning when an ambulance collided with another vehicle at the intersection of Addison and Menard avenues in the city’s Northwest Side.

City 911 dispatchers got the initial call at 9:02 a.m. Fire Department personnel called for an Emergency Medical Services Plan 1, a five-ambulance response, at 9:11 a.m.

Chicago Fire Department spokesman Commander Will Knight said three victims were taken from the scene in serious condition — two to Advocate Illinois Masonic Hospital and one to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge — and five were transported in “stable” condition, with non-life threatening injuries — two to Our Lady of the Resurrection Medical Center, two to Swedish Covenant Hospital, and one to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park. The two taken to Swedish Covenant were the paramedics in the stricken ambulance.

Edward Martinez, who said he saw the accident occur, described what happened. He said the ambulance was headed east on Addison Street with its lights and sirens activated. A mid-sized sedan entered the intersection as the ambulance was passing through it. The ambulance struck the car on the front driver’s side. The impact sent the car into a spin and it ended up rolling over onto its roof. It came to a rest on the crosswalk at the south edge of the intersection. A third vehicle apparently collided with the sedan.

Officer Laura Kubiak, with the Chicago Police Department’s Office of News Affairs, confirmed the accident involved a Chicago Fire Department ambulance, but could not affirm the information provided by Martinez. She added that, because of the number of people involved in the crash, it might take some time for officers to generate a completed report.

Three injured in ambulance rollover

Posted on 25 September 2008 by admin

An ambulance owned by a private company hit the edge of a trailer alongside a busy Rehoboth road Wednesday morning, launching the emergency vehicle into the air before it rolled over, officials said.

Three people were sent to the hospital, but no serious injuries were reported from the crash, which happened about 11:30 a.m. in the 200 block of Tremont Street, according to Rehoboth fire chief Robert Pray.

The Alert Ambulance company vehicle was headed south when its right front tire rolled onto a construction trailer parked along the side of the road. The tire rolled up the ramp, causing the ambulance to go airborne for about 30 to 40 feet, Pray said. “It probably slid close to another 100 feet,” he said.

The trailer, on the side of the road after workers unloaded a bulldozer, was in the breakdown lane. “There isn’t much leeway on the side of the road,” Pray said.

The ambulance was transporting an elderly woman to Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro at the time. The patient was strapped to a stretcher and didn’t appear injured, while the female “EMT in the back was pretty banged up,” Pray said.

The male driver was hurt as well, although he was walking around at the scene. He and the other Alert Ambulance employee were taken to Sturdy Memorial for treatment, while the patient was taken to Rhode Island Hospital.

A call to Rehoboth police seeking the victims’ names was not immediately returned.

Before re-opening the road to traffic, state police performed a reconstruction of the crash at the scene, Pray said.

Alert Ambulance is a private company that generally transports  nursing home patients to and from the hospital, Pray said. The company also holds some 911 contracts.

Ambulance crashes south of Safford

Posted on 25 September 2008 by admin

Who do you call when an ambulance is involved in a crash?

The answer was found Tuesday evening after a Southwest Ambulance transporting a patient to the Tucson Medical Center crashed and flipped on Highway 191 south of Safford.

Inside the ambulance was 63-year-old Sharon Ferguson, who was being taken to the Tucson hospital for heart problems.

According to Department of Public Safety officer Andrew Shurtz, the ambulance’s left side went off freshly laid pavement in the construction zone near milepost 97 and made contact with the rough, milled road that has not yet been repaved. Shurtz said the the crash occurred at 7:40 p.m.

The driver, Alyssa Gonzales, 18, fishtailed the ambulance for approximately 400 feet before possibly flipping end over end and rolling to a stop on the highway’s west shoulder, according to Shurtz.

Two other crew members, Brandy Watson, 30, and Rick Ramsey, 40, were also inside the ambulance. Gonzales and Watson were in the front of the ambulance and were restrained. Ramsey was unrestrained in the back of the ambulance, tending to Ferguson, who was also unrestrained.

Shurtz said Ramsey suffered minor cuts and bumps and was transported by ambulance to the Mount Graham Regional Medical Center along with Watson. Gonzales, who did not appear to be injured, was taken to the medical center in a car. All three were examined, treated and released.

Ferguson was airlifted from the scene and flown to the University Medical Center in Tucson. She is listed in critical condition as of Wednesday afternoon.

While Shurtz wouldn’t comment on the presumed speed the ambulance was traveling when it crashed, he did say the posted speed limit upon entering the construction zone is 55 mph.

The ambulance was removed by Nuttall’s Towing.

There were a total of 41 ambulance accidents reported on EMSResponder.com from June 2006 through April 2007. These accidents resulted in a total of five reported deaths and at least 43 injuries to EMS responders. While this summary does not encompass every accident that occurred during this time period, as not all accidents were covered by local media, it does offer a snapshot of the most serious incidents. This summary includes only ground ambulance crashes in the U.S., and does not include accidents involving personal vehicles of EMS personnel, other rescue apparatus, or air ambulance crashes.

JUNE 2006
