SOUTHBEND, IN – A Grand Haven, Mich., man is dead after a three-vehicle crash involving a Marcellus ambulance near the intersection of Michigan 40 and 78th Avenue near Lawton in Van Buren County on Saturday morning, a Michigan State Police officer has confirmed.

Police and medics were dispatched just before 11 a.m. No one else was injured seriously in the crash.

Sgt. James Bennett of the MSP Paw Paw Post told WSBT-TV that Terrence Eaton, 63, was alone in his vehicle when it was hit.

It appears the driver of a vehicle was trying to make a “U” turn on M- 40 and apparently didn’t see the vehicle driven by Eaton, Bennett said. While attempting to make the “U” turn, the driver’s vehicle collided with the vehicle driven by Eaton. The Eaton vehicle was then thrown into the path of the oncoming ambulance, which was heading north on M-40. The ambulance had a passenger, but was not on a priority call: no lights or siren were on.

The ambulance, which was headed to Lakeland Hospital in Paw Paw with the patient, probably was totaled, Bennett said. After the crash, a Van Buren County ambulance took the subjects from the wrecked ambulance to Lakeland Hospital. The patient suffered minor injuries in the crash.

Bennett said the name of the driver making the “U” turn is not being released at this time, but he is from the Paw Paw area. He said the case will be submitted to the Van Buren County prosecutor to evaluate for possible charges.
