ROCHESTER, MN РAn accident involving an ambulance headed to another crash site sent two people to the hospital this evening.
The accident happened shortly after 5 p.m. when a Gold Cross Ambulance was responding to a crash in north Rochester.
According to Rochester Police Sgt. Jim Evenson, the ambulance was traveling westbound on Second Street Southwest when it collided with a car headed northbound on Third Avenue Southwest. The ambulance and car then crashed into two vehicles in the eastbound lane of Second Street.
Evenson said firefighters had to extricate two injured victims — each in different vehicles.
Robert DeBerg, of Iowa, was the driver of one of the cars waiting in the eastbound lane for the light to turn green. He was on his way to a sleep study appointment. He said he suddenly saw the ambulance and car collide in the intersection and head towards his car and the one in front of him.
“I’m very fortunate,” he said.
